Before two years ago, we didn't yet know much about the hypothetical Apple tablet device, prescient leaks and rumors aside. We didn't know for sure which OS it would run (although we were pretty confident it would be iOS and not Mac OS X). We didn't know what it would cost -- the WSJ hinted at pricing near the $1,000 mark -- and we didn't know what it would look like. We certainly didn't know what it would be called, even though there were strong suggestions; apparently the Mad TV writers and some Dubai architects had some good sources. We couldn't have guessed that our most extravagant…

  • Siri probably isn't the bandwidth hog the WaPo warned you about

    Mel Martin
    27 Jan 2012 | 6:00 pm
"How Siri is ruining your cellphone service." That's the searing headline from the Washington Post in an article by Paul Farhi. Farhi claims that "Siri's dirty little secret is that she's a bandwidth guzzler, the digital equivalent of a 10-miles-per-gallon Hummer H1." Where's he coming up with this? Apparently, the "Siri eats bandwidth" claim is based on a study by Arieso that reports that iPhone 4S owners consume twice as much cellular data as iPhone 4 users and 3 times as much as iPhone 3G users. Recent Android phones are also chewing up twice as much data as the iPhone 3G, while 3G and 4G…

I'm live at the Best of Show awards, where Macworld has chosen the best products from the show (hence the name). Sorry about the lack of images, you'd basically see washed out photos of a projected image. Be sure to check out the links to each product. 3:07 Just now getting started! Up first, Boinx with iStopMotion. Florian from Boinx is doing a demo of iStopMotion. As we said back in December, it is pretty nice. 3:12 A beautiful little paper cutout animation from a kid who used iStopMotion -- really cool stuff. 3:15 PDFpen for iPad is up next from Smile. Really interesting to see how…
  • Doxie's new DoxieGo + Wi-Fi: Demo video at Macworld iWorld 2012

Yesterday while I was on the show floor at Macworld | iWorld 2012, I came upon a 7-foot-tall scanner walking around. After I figured out that my cold medicine wasn't making me hallucinate, I knew that I was in the right place -- the Doxie booth. There I was able to interview Paul Scandariato of Doxie about their new DoxieGo + Wi-Fi mobile scanner and grab some video. The new scanner communicates with your Mac or iOS device over Wi-Fi, and allowing you to scan straight to the cloud if you wish. Paul noted that many users scan their documents straight to Dropbox, then open them for viewing or…
  • Seen at Macworld | iWorld 2012: $68,000 diamond speakers

Standing in the middle of the Macworld | iWorld 2012 exhibit floor looking a bit out of place, Alljack's $68,000 diamond-studded speakers -- fresh from CES -- are drawing a bit of attention. Inspired by a wine bottle and a flower, the speakers are crafted with Russian diamonds, gold plating, simulated wood grain and other decorative metal. Alljack works with industrial designers and engineers to create their products, and these speakers are crafted from precision-controlled machinery. Alljack is a prototype center from Taiwan, so these are most likely the only set of these speakers that'll be…

Distro is 25... weeks old, today! And to celebrate we're debuting a new page that puts you, our readers, front and center. We've been sending out questions over various social networking channels and collecting your answers for the inaugural run of Snap Analysis. Among other things, you weighed in on RIM's CEO switch up, as did our own Darren Murph in his editorial, "RIM's New CEO Isn't the Shakeup It Needed." We have more editorializing coming your way from the desk of Donald Melanson, who's taking the Ultrabook marketing hype to task. Also in this issue, we test drive the BlackBerry Porsche…
  • Transformers: Dark of the Moon clip breaks down shooting movies, special effects in 3D (video)

    26 Jan 2012 | 9:02 pm
The Transformers: Dark of the Moon Limited Edition Blu-ray 3D doesn't hit the streets officially until next week, but you can get a look at one of the special features early right here. In this video clip director Michael Bay and other members of the production team explain some of the special challenges that came with shooting the special-effects heavy movie in 3D. It required changes to his usual frenetic cutting style with fewer pans and longer shots, as well as extra work by the editors on each element of animation overlaid on each frame. For a longer discussion about the background of…
  • Samsung 2011 Q4 earnings official: $42 billion in sales, $4.7 billion operating profit

    Michael Gorman
    26 Jan 2012 | 5:37 pm
It might not be making as much money as the competition in Cupertino, but that doesn't mean Samsung isn't raking in cash at an astonishing clip. We reported earnings estimates a few weeks ago, but now it's official that the firm posted a 5.3 trillion won ($4.7 billion) operating profit in Q4 2011. That represents over a 2 trillion won ($1.8 billion) increase year over year. In all, it pulled in 47.3 trillion won ($42 billion) in sales, thanks in no small part to the over 300 million phones Sammy sold last year. While mobile accounted for roughly 40 percent of company sales and half of its…
  • Logitech's Q3 2012 report confirms Revue is sold out, Harmony remote refresh 'in the coming months'

    Richard Lawler
    26 Jan 2012 | 7:51 am
Logitech's Q3 earnings for the 2012 fiscal year don't have many surprises since the company already revealed it was dropping out of the Google TV team. In prepared remarks, company management confirmed it is completely sold out of new units, closing the door on any users still trying to nab a $99 Revue (who shouldn't be too heartbroken, since Vizio is promising a second gen unit is on the way at the same price). There is promise however, if you're looking for a new Harmony remote model, while interim CEO Guerrino De Luca says the company is late in providing a successor to the best selling…
  • AT&T reports 'blow-out' Q4, revenues up 3.6 percent, 7.6 million iPhones activated

    Mat Smith
    26 Jan 2012 | 6:07 am
AT&T is all smiles again, as it announces a quarter in which it managed to sell 9.4 million smartphones. It nearly doubled handset sales from Q3 and managed -- perhaps unsurprisingly -- 7.6 million iPhone activations, with the majority being Apple's latest flavor of phone. It looks like the loss of its exclusivity tag hasn't hurt its sales, with Ma Bell quick to note that it sold far more iPhones than its Big Red rival. Total consolidated revenues were up $1.1 billion from last year, that's a 3.6 percent increase and it's up just over $1 billion from last quarter. However, due to the…

  • Jesse Jackson Enters Grammy Discussion, Considers Protesting Award Show

    AP
    27 Jan 2012 | 5:46 pm
NEW YORK — The Rev. Jesse Jackson is entering the fray over The Recording Academy's cuts to its Grammy categories: He's asking to meet with the president of the organization and has raised the possibility of protests with the awards less than two weeks away. The civil rights activist sent a letter to Neil Portnow, the president and CEO of the Academy, and expressed his dismay over the Academy's decision last April to cut its categories from 109 to 78, the biggest overhaul in its then 53-year history. In the letter, Jackson said he had been talking to members of the entertainment…
  • 'Glee': Listen To The Music From 'Michael' Now!

    27 Jan 2012 | 5:44 pm
Happy Friday, Gleeks! It's that time of the week again -- all of the songs from the anticipated "Michael" episode of "Glee" have been finally been released. We're really digging Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Sam's (Chord Overstreet) sweet "Human Nature" duet, and Artie (Kevin McHale) "Scream"-worthy track with Mike (Harry Shum Jr.). "Black and White" is also a standout track, and surprisingly not one of the tracks that lead vocalist McHale pitched to Ryan Murphy and the writers. "There's a number that Harry and I are doing that we really fought for, so we were excited to do it," McHale told…
  • The Top Celebrity Restaurants

    The Huffington Post
    27 Jan 2012 | 5:30 pm
Like the rest of us, celebrities love to indulge in great food and drink whenever they can, but for some, being able to get a table wherever and whenever they want isn't enough. Take actor and producer Robert De Niro, who after patronizing sushi chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa's Los Angeles restaurant, urged the chef to take his concept to the East Coast. A partnership was born, and now the duo's Nobu empire has locations around the world, while the original Tribeca location alone boasts more than $8 million in annual revenue and remains one of New York's most coveted reservations. De Niro is far…
  • Is There Something Katherine Heigl Didn't Miss About 'Grey's'?

    Alex Moaba
    27 Jan 2012 | 5:26 pm
Katherine Heigl's "One for the Money" press rounds have turned into something of a "Grey's Anatomy" goodwill tour this week. In several interviews, the former medical drama star discussed her regrets about leaving the show and spoke emotionally about how much she misses the cast and playing her character, Dr. Izzie Stevens. Friday on "Rachael Ray" (weekdays on ABC), Heigl reiterated many of those same sentiments, but also mentioned one "Grey's" episode she didn't mind missing: last season's widely-panned musical. "I watched the musical episode, which I thought was so fun, and it was crazy to…
